Ptolemaios I. -
Sótér (*367 - †289 př. n.l.) založil u svého paláce v Alexandrii
věhlasnou Alexandrijskou knihovnu, která se později stala součástí
Múseionu (též Musaeum - badatelská a umělcká instituce).
- Filadelfos (*309 - †246
př. n.l.), který jej rozvinul to největší kolekce zvířat v zajetí v té
době. Bylo tam množství exotických zvířat - 96 slonů, 24 lvů, 14
levhartů, 16 gepardů, karakali, ženetky, medvědi, 14 velbloudů, 60 divokých koz, 100
exotických ovcí, 28 bílých zebu, 8 etiopských volů, 7 párů oryxů,
buvolci a další antilopy,
7 párů divokých oslů,
8 párů pštrosů, žirafy, zebry, nosorožci, stovky domácích zvířat, množství ptáků
(sokoli, jestřábi, papoušci, pávi, bažanti...), velcí hadi atd.
Zvěřinec pak udržovali i další Ptolemaiovci až do doby dobytí Egypta
Římským císařem Oktaviánem Augustem v roce 30 n.l. Potom sloužila tato
největší antická "zoo" světa jako vypravovací stanoviště pro transport
afrických zvířat do Evropy.
Ptolemy I - Soter
(*367 - †289 BC) founded near his palace in Alexandria a famous Library
of Alexandria, which later became part of Mouseion (also Musaeum -
institution of musas). Part of the library was also large menagerie with
extraordinary number of animals. The menagerie, resp. animals was used
for ceremonial processions, but served mainly to scientists for study
and research.
After Soter the
menagerie was taken over by his son Ptolemaios II -
Philadelphos (*309 - †246 BC), who developed it to the largest
collection of animals in captivity to that date. There were many exotic
animals - 96 elephants, 24 lions, 14 leopards, 16 cheetahs, caracals,
genets, bears, 14 camels,
60 wild goats, 100 exotic sheep, 28 white zebus, 8 Ethiopian oxen, 7
pairs of oryxes, hartebeests and other antelopes, 7 pairs of wild asses, 8 pairs of ostriches, giraffes,
zebras, rhinos, hundreds
domestic animals, numerous birds (falcons, hawks, parrots, peacocks,
pheasants...), big snakes etc. After that also other Ptolemaic
keep the menagerie until the time of conquest of Egypt by Roman emperor Octavius Augustus in 30 AD. Then this largest ancient "zoo" of the world
served as a staging post for transport African animals to Europe. |
