Původně sultánský, později královský šelminec, či menažerie -
známá především kvůli chovu berberských lvů. Jejich lov začal již od dob
nadvlády Starověkého Říma (2. stol. př.n.l. - 5. stol. n.l.)... Lvi byly
Lov pokračoval i s příchodem Arabů (7. stol.)
civilizaci. Poslední ránu dostala populace lvů v dobách Francouzského
protektorátu (1912-1955). Ještě před koncem století stihli francouzští
lovci vyhubit berberské lvy v Alžírsku i Tunisku. Proto tehdejší sultán
Moulay Abdelhafid nechal hned v prvním roce protektorátu pochytat
zbývající lvy z pohoří Atlas. Tito lvi byli umístěni právě do
Abdelhafida sice skončila ještě v tomtéž roce, kdy do zvěřince přivezl
dočasně přemístěno do zoo v Casablance a v Meknésu. V roce 1955 se
sultán vrátil z exilu a s ním i lvi do sultánského zvěřince. V roce 1957
v roce 1999). Hassan II. převzal mimo jiné i královský zvěřinec, který
však v roce 1973 zrušil - všichni lvi byli převezeni do nové národní zoo
v Témaře (Zoo Rabat). Je to údajně poslední geneticky čistá linie
berberských lvů a většina čistokrevných lvů (ne-li všichni) v současných
zoo pochází prý právě z chovu marockých sultánů a králů v Rabatu.
levharti.
Originally sultan's, and later royal carnivores house or
menagerie - known primarily for breeding of Barbary lions. Their hunt
began since the age of Ancient Rome domination (2nd cent. BC - 5th
century. AD) ... Lions were hunted and thereafter killed in the hundreds
in arenas and triumphal processions. The hunting continued with the
arrival of the Arabs (7th cent.) - they gave a reward for the dead lion,
because considered it dangerous animal for civilization. The population
of lions gave the last stroke of fate in times of the French
Protectorate (1912-1955). Already before end of the century, French
hunters had killed off Barbary lions in Algeria and Tunisia. Therefore,
the then Sultan Moulay Abdelhafid let to catch the remaining lions in
the Atlas Mountains right in the first year of the Protectorate . These
lions were placed just in the sultan's house of carnivores (menagerie)
in Rabat. The last wild lion was poached in 1942 (according to other
sources in 1922).
It is not clear whether the menagerie existed already earlier, however
probably its history began with the arrival of Lions (1912). Although
the reign of Sultan Abdelhafid ended in the same year, when he brought
the lions to the menagerie, but it endured also throughout the reign of
his brother Sultan Yusef ben Hassan (1912-1927) and the subsequent
period of reign Yusef's son - Mohammed V. He was expelled into exile in
1953 and 21 lions were temporarily relocated to the zoos in Casablanca
and Meknes. In 1955, the Sultan returned from exile, and with him also
lions to sultan's menagerie. In 1957, sultan turned into king and the
sultan's menagerie become royal menagerie. Mohammed V reigned until his
death (1961), when his eldest son Hassan II ascended the throne (also
reigned until his death in 1999). Hassan II took over among other things
also the royal menagerie, however abolished it in 1973 - all of lions
were moved to new National zoo in Temara (Rabat Zoo). Reportedly it is
the last genetically pure line of Barbary lions and majority purebred
lions (if not all) in current zoos supposedly comes from breeding of
Moroccan sultans and kings in Rabat.
Any credible data about other animals in the sultan / royal menagerie
are lacking. Apparently there were only or mainly carnivores, because in
older French texts is used rather name of "fauverie" (carnivores house)
than "ménagerie". According to some data there were in menagerie also
leopards. |

údajně odsud pochází většina čistokrevných berberských lvů
(ne-li úplně všichni), kteří jsou v současných zoo
reportedly majority of purebred Barbary lions (if not all) who
are in current zoos come from here |
