jedna z nejstarších zoo Kazachstánu - pravděpodobně úplně
nejstarší, ale historické materiály chybí a tak původní vznik není nijak
doložen, proto se udává založení v roce 1938 (o rok později než Zoo Almaty). Na přelomu 20. a 30. let do Karagandy pravidelně zajížděl
pojízdný zoocirkus a později také pojízdná výstava Borovského
zapovedniku. V roce 1936 zoovýstava údajně zůstala v Centrálním parku
Karagandy i přes zimu a poté (na četná přání občanů) nastálo. Zoo tedy
vznikla pravděpodobně v roce 1936 (z této zoovýstavy), oficiálně však
byla otevřená až v roce 1938. Původně to byla maličká zoo s malými
klecemi a jen několika zvířaty, ale postupně se zvětšovala a zvětšovala
jak zoo, tak její kolekce zvířat.
V roce 1966 (podle jiných zdrojů 1956) začala stavba nové "zimní zoo"
(tzn. zimoviště pro teplomilná zvířata) na novém místě za městem (budovy
ve stávající zoo v centru byly narušené kvůli "sedání země" nad šachtami
až o 2,5 m, proto zde nebylo možné stavět velké budovy). Následně bylo
rozhodnuto o přemístění celé zoo. V roce 1968 byla teplomilná zvířata
přestěhována do nové zoo, přičemž stará sloužila dále (v zimně bez
teplomilných zvířat), protože v nové zoo chyběly letní výběhy. Až do
roku 1985 fungovali obě zoo paralelně, pak bylo vše definitivně
přestěhováno do nové zoo.
Dnes má zoo 43,5 ha (z toho ovšem jen 8 ha expozice), specializuje se na
faunu Kazachstánu a Střední Asie, ačkoli je zde i mnoho dalších zvířat.
Lvi, tygři, levharti, pumy, medvědi, vlci, lišky, surikaty, mangusty,
opice (mandrili, paviáni, makaci...), hroši, koně Převalského, kulani,
velbloudi, lamy, jeleni, zubři, argali, divočáci, klokani, pštrosi, emu,
dravci, papoušci, jeřábi, pelikáni, vodní ptáci, bažanti, akvárium a
terárium...
Nejvíce se zoo proslavila "mluvícím" slonem jménem Batyr - celosvětově
známý slon, který uměl údajně vydávat zvuky podobné lidskému hlasu - asi
20 slov a krátkých vět.

zoo-circus and later mobile exhibition of Borovskoye Zapovednik
regularly came to Karaganda. In 1936, the zoo-exhibition reportedly
remained in the Karaganda Central Park over the winter and then had
stayed forever (on wishes of numerous people). Thus the zoo probably
arised already in 1936 (from this zoo-exhibition), however it was
officially opened until 1938. Originally it was a tiny zoo with small
cages and a few animals, but gradually both the zoo and its collection
got larger and larger.
In 1966 (according to another sources in 1956) a construction of a new
"winter zoo" (i.e. the wintering place for thermophilic animals) began
at the new location behind the city (the buildings in the existing zoo
in the city were damaged due to subsidence of land above the shafts for
up to 2,5 m, so it was impossible to build large buildings here).
Subsequently, it was decided to transfer the entire zoo. In 1968, the
thermophilic animals were moved to a new zoo, where the old served still
(during winter without the thermofilic animals), because summer
enclosures lacked in the new zoo. Until 1985 both zoos worked parallely,
then everything was definitively moved to the new zoo.
Today, the zoo has 43.5 ha (however of which only 8 ha is exposure), it
specializes in the fauna of Kazakhstan and Central Asia, although there
are also many other animals. Lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, bears,
wolves, foxes, meerkats, mongoose, monkeys (mandrills, baboons,
macaques...), hippos, Przewalski horses, kulans, camels, llamas, deer,
wisents, argali, wild boars, wallabies , ostriches, emus, raptors,
parrots, cranes, pelicans, waterfowl, pheasants, aquarium and
terrarium...
The zoo became famous most by "talking" elephant named Batyr - the world
famous elephant, who could reportedly make sounds similar to human voice
- around 20 words and short sentences.
