nejznámější a nejvýznamnější německá (tehdy pruská) menažerie.
Její základy položil Fridrich Vilém II., když na Pavím ostrově (Pfaueninsel)
zřídil výběhy asi 60 pávů a jiných vzácných hrabavých.
orlů, sokolů, výrů a dalších sov, výběhy klokanů, lam, jelenů, srnců a
divokých prasat, opičinec s 10 klecemi, výběhy exotických koz a ovcí,
pštrosů a kasuárů, stáje buvolů s rybníčkem (buvoli zde byli s
berneškami kanadskými, labutěmi a dalšími vodními ptáky)... Krátce zde
žil krotký los. V roce 1830 přibyl i africký lev a narodilo se první
medvídě. Z Habeše byli dovezeni paviáni a na vodě stála bobří hráz. 1833
S příchodem parníků, stavbou mola a později s
vlakovým spojením návštěvnost stoupla natolik, že byl zvěřinec
nejvyhledávanější berlínskou atrakcí.
Počátkem roku 1832 byl zvěřinec domovem nejméně 847 zvířat (např. 4
paviáni, 8 lam, 9 jelenů, 5 domácích buvolů, 1 zebu, 1 lev, 3 medvědi, 4
orli mořští, 2 orli skalní, 63 pávů, 31 perliček, 42 bažantů a v
palmovém skleníku několik aligátorů, hadů a chameleonů).
Po smrti krále Fridricha Viléma III. (1840) sláva zvěřince poněkud
upadla.
přislíbil i bezplatně převést všechna zvířata z menažerie do budoucí
nové zoo. V inventáři z 31. května 1842 je lev, ocelot, mývali, vydra,
jezevec, medvědi, malpy, kočkodani, makaci, mandril, chápan, aguti,
svišť, klokani, lamy, muflon, buvoli, zebu, několik plemen ovcí a koz,
bobři, dravci, sovy, kvakoši, kolpíci, bílí i černí čápi, několik druhů
vodních ptáků a menších pěvců, mnoho pávů, bažantů a perliček atd.
Dnes je celý ostrov přírodní rezervací a na seznamu UNESCO. Dosud je zde
kruhový ptačinec s pávy (do r. 2009 i papoušci ara, kakadu, kachničky
mandarínské a jiní ptáci).
best known and most imoirtant German (then Prussian) menagerie.
Its foundations were laid by Frederick William II, when created
enclosures of about 60 peacocks and other rare gamefowl on Peacock Island (Pfaueninsel).
His son, Frederick William III gradually added other breeding facilities
and after visiting the Jardin des Plantes in Paris rebuilt the
Pfaueninsel into a huge menagerie, which could already be called a zoo.
Approximately since the beginning of the millennium, a different
breeding facilitiesappeared on the island (mostly around 1810 - 1820).
Dovecote, special bird house and aviary (standing still), a house and a
pond for waterfowl and the bear enclosure for two bears (its torso is
still visible on the island), pheasantry with 18 cages, cages for
eagles, falcons, horned and other owls, enclosures of kangaroos, llamas,
red deer, roe deer and wild boar, monkey house with 10 cages, enclosures
of exotic goats and sheep, ostriches and cassowaries, buffalo stables
with a pond (buffalo were here with Canadian geese, swans and other
waterfowl)... Shortly also tame elk lived here. 1830, African lion was
added and first bear cub was born. Baboons was imported from Abyssinia
and a beaver dam was on the water. 1833, opera singer Heinrich Blume
brought from England two Shetland ponies which was rare in continental
Europe at that time.
Menagerie on Pfaueninsel aroused the interest of Berliners and therefore
the king opened it to the public - initially with no time limit, but
soon (since May 1821) only for three days a week. With coming of
steamships, building of pier and later with the rail link traffic, the
attendance has increased so much that the menagerie was the most popular
attractions in Berlin.
In early 1832 the menagerie was a home of at least 847 animals (eg. 4
baboons, 8 llamas, 9 deer, 5 domestic buffaloes, 1 zebu, 1 lion, 3
bears, 4 sea eagles, 2 golden eagles, 63 peacocks, 31 guinea fowl, 42
pheasants and several alligators, snakes and chameleons in the palm
house).
After the death of King Frederick William III (1840) fame of menagerie
little bit fell. His son, Frederick William IV was oriented more towards
art and so significantly reduced the resources for the menagerie, which
got to the verge of its existence. Fortunately, Professor Lichtenstein
convinced the king on the establishment of a regular municipal zoo in
his pheasantry in the park called Tiergarten. The king also promised to
transfer all animals from the menagerie to the future new zoo for free.
In the inventory from 31st May 1842 is: lion, ocelot, raccoons, otter,
badger, bears, capuchins, green monkeys, macaques, mandrill, spider
monkey, agoutis, marmot, kangaroos, llamas, mouflon, buffalos, zebus,
several breeds of sheep and goats, beavers, raptors, owls, night herons,
spoonbills, white and black storks, several species of waterfowl and
small songbirds, many peacocks, pheasants and guinea fowl etc.
Today, the whole island is a nature reserve and in UNESCO list. To this
day, the circular bird aviary with peacocks is there (up to 2009 also
macaws, cockatoos, mandarin duck and other birds). |
